Yang Wen-li
From the AMAZING anime Legend of Galactic Heroes, Yang Wen-li is a military genius for the Free Planets Alliance Star Fleet by accident. He doesn't overly like the military but joined because he needed the money to pursue his real goal to become a historian.
Why I like him: He's super intelligent yet so slack about everything. Figure out how to win? Sure! Figure out how to outsmart the enemy? Sure! Figure out how to get a wife to make a delicious meal? SURE!
Why I hate him: I seriously don't. He's too much of a REAL person to hate.
Overall: Yang is my favourite character EVER in all the shows I've watched. (which says a lot) He made me laugh, cry, and wonder. I can't say more awesome things about him without going into fangirl mode. I would have his babies if he was a real man!

Tylor (of Irresponsible Captain Tylor) is like that a lot too – very smart and therefore lazy, though while Yang has an air of quiet competence, Tylor appears to be a bumbling fool at first glance.
