365 Days of Anime Characters: Day 174/365 Ginias Sahalin

Day 174/365

Ginias Sahalin

From the anime Gundam 08th MS Team, Ginias Sahalin is a Zeon officer and a brilliant scientist that is charged with the task of building a great mobile weapon powerful enough to destroy the Earth Federation Forces. He is the older sibling of Aina Sahalin and cares for her a great deal. Together they wish to accomplish his goals.

Why I like him: He starts off as a lovely man with a dream and slowly descends into madness! That was a pleasure to watch. Right from the beginning you could tell there was something quirky about him.

Why I hate him: Scroll over for ***SPOILER*** He shoots his own freaking sister right in the chest and gets really mad when he finds out she survived. (because of the pocket watch...groan...)

Overall: Highly recommend watching this to see Ginias superb performance.

Aina and Ginias at a lovely party

  1. Oh yeah, 08th MS Team, one of my favorite Gundam shows and also one of my favorite dubs. I always thought Ginias’s progression was rather cliché and transparent. But he served his purpose well, the creepy, incestuous, back-stabbing bastard.

    Holy shit.

Mai husbando’s getting attention. I love you.

IMHO, Ghinius is one of the most psychologically complex and tragic villains of the Universal Century. I don’t think many fans give him the consideration he deserves, and unfortunately dismiss him far too quickly as a one-dimensional monster. Admittedly much of his depth comes from subtleties that are easy to miss (such as his wasting appearance towards the end, body language, etc), and a series as short and character hefty as 08th isn’t exactly the best place for such a time-needing character.

Still, he’s character that I’ll always find fascinating and incredibly compelling. Even though we’re given so little on his backstory, etc, everything about him screams that there’s so much more going on. I really need to sit down and write some essays on what I think makes him tick, because dear lord will they be a long time coming IMHO.

Huge kudos for giving him a bit of attention other than the mindless bashing I see more often than not.

BTW, have you ever watched Revolutionary Girl Utena? Because there’s a character in there that’s so close to Ghinius psychologically and situationally it’s scary IMHO. He has a bigger role and gets a bit more time than Ghinius does too, so understanding him is pretty much the key to understanding (and appreciating!) Ghinius 😀

Then again, biased fangirl is horribly biased ._.
