Review of 2010 Anime Part 2 ~Spring~

Like always there was a lot of shows to watch in spring. 24 shows aired and out of that I watched 21. (Well 20 see below) Sometimes the amount scares me that I'm able to keep up with. Thankfully there were a handful of treasures in spring that I was highly looking forward to. There were 6 season "2" shows airing and I watched half of those. Here we go with Spring's Aired Anime.

Baseball

Boobs and Ass

Only Ikkitousen, Major and Jewelpet weren't watched due to all being related to series I haven't even touched yet. I actually can't wait to get my hands on Ikkitousen. I know it's a boob filled, poorly adapted, Romance of the Three Kingdoms knock off but the fan inside me tells me I must watch it at some point. Now that all has aired I think I'll tackle it for next year. Major I'm still afraid of since it's about baseball... Which is funny cause the S2 of Ookiku Furikabutte aired as well which I enjoyed a great deal.

I've always enjoyed spring because there's always plenty of shows to sink my teeth into. Amazingly all are finished airing but 2. SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors and Hime Chen! Otogi Chikku Idol Lilpri. Long titles are long but worth sitting down and watching if you A: Like the idea of Gundam chibis being ROTK characters or B: Like magical girls who sing. I obviously am in love with SD Gundam way more than Lilpri but both are pretty awesome watches.

The Five Leaves group

Best Show of spring for me was House of Five Leaves. I looked forward to a new episode every week. I drooled over the OP and the art just about made me cum in my pants. It was a lovely slow show about an adorable shy samurai with his bandit buddies. SO GOOD. I gotta re-watch and review it to gush more because it deserves more love.

Worst Show of spring for me aside from Kiss x Sis because I dropped that show like a smelly cat shit down the toilet... Anyway the worst show was Angel Beats. I tried REALLY hard to like it but KEY... I fucking hate you KEY. They can't do anything right. I vowed not to watch anymore of their crap releases ever again but I made an exception for this one because it wasn't made from a VN. It was new but still failed prey to the usual crap KEY puts out. >.<

ewww >.<

Here's my big list of Best to Worst shows of spring 2010:

  1. House of Five Leaves 10/10
  2. SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors (still airing) 10/10
  3. Arakawa Under the Bridge 9/10
  4. Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin 9/10
  5. Senkou no Night Raid 8/10
  6. Tatami Galaxy 8/10
  7. Giant Killing 7/10
  8. Ookiku Furikabutte 7/10
  9. Koihime Musou 7/10
  10. Working 7/10
  11. Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan 6/10
  12. Hime Chen! Otogi Chikku Idol Lilpri (still airing) 5/10
  13. Kaichou wa Maid-sama 5/10
  14. Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou 4/10
  15. K-On 4/10
  16. Heroman 4/10
  17. B Gata H Kei 3/10
  18. Mayoi Neko Overrun 3/10
  19. Uragiri wa Boku no Namae o Shitteiru 3/10
  20. Angel Beats 2/10
  21. Kiss x Sis (DROPPED) 1/10

Surprise enjoyment: Giant Killing is about soccer... I'm not a sports person let along a soccer one but this one grabbed me. It wasn't the sport it's self but more so the characters striving for their dreams. It was great fun reading both Shinmaru and Emperor J posts on this wonderful show.

Surprise fail: Uragiri wa Boku no Namae o Shitteiru... I hate "yaoi" series that are like this. All the drama with none of the meat to back it up. I'll stick with those weird yaoi ova's that come out every now and then. At least I get to see sex there.

Honorable mentions: Rainbow started off very rough and tough. The imagery alone was enough to make you wanna cry. It was a really dark anime about boys sent to prison and how insane it was in there for them. It got more uplifting by the end of the series but still kicked you in the balls every chance it got. Heroman... Just exactly what was that? Senkou no Night Raid everyone dismissed after the first episode. But honestly I thought it was great!

Of the shows that I’ve seen I’d have to say that Working was my favorite. I liked the characters, and usually if I like the characters, I’ll end up liking the show.

That being said, I thought Angel Beats was pretty good too. It wasn’t spectacular, and it did have a good amount wrong with it (plotholes and such), but episode to episode I found it enjoyable.

Best show of the year might be Kuragehime. God I love that show.

Yup the characters totally made working worth watching. Really enjoyed that one and if i wasn’t lazy I would have blogged it since I did do the first episode >.>

AB I won’t bother touching here 😛 I didn’t like it that’s it that’s all. TK was the best from that dump.

Kuragehime is totally amazing but Katanagatari has won my heart for overall. It’s totally top or Fall though!

Here, truly, we will see how massive our difference in taste is:

    1. K-On!! 10/10
    2. Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou 9/10
    3. Angel Beats! 9/10
    4. Arakawa Under the Bridge 8/10
    5. B Gata H Kei 8/10
    6. Giant Killing (not finished) 7/10
    7. Senkou no Night Raid 7/10

    Dropped:
SD Gundam Sangokuden Brave Battle Warriors (still airing) [may continue]
    Tatami Galaxy
    Working
    Mayoi Neko Overrun [may continue]

And do your damn research, Angel Beats wasn’t made by Key. It was just the writer for their games, Maeda Jun. And personally, I don’t think it’s right to compare AB to the Key games, not only because it’s a whole different thing (light novel vs. visual novel), but because it has way more heart than any of the Key adaptions.

heh well just for a few shows being different it isn’t all that bad! there is some similar there heh

totally don’t blame you for dropping neko, honestly a little surprised at you dropping working though. but i suppose the characters didn’t meld with you. SD Gundam is totally an acquired taste XD

As for AB… having a writer is close enough for me 😛 While Key might have more “heart” they certainly have a similar feeling that you can’t deny.

My favorites were pretty easy to come up with, but I didn’t watch as many as you did by far..
Working, because it had no business getting that funny or that interesting.
Tatami Galaxy, because despite being talky it was surprisingly vivid and had a unique premise I’ve never seen before (outside the Groundhog Day undertones).
Five Leaves, for the mood and the characters who felt real.
Giant Killing, for being the only show I was really unable to wait for each week – and I hate sports/sports anime.

The ones I felt were the most disappointing (even if I liked some of them somewhat) were:
Angel Beats, an aimless trainwreck desperately trying to take the easy way out of everything.
Arakawa, for beating comedy dead horses into the ground, and not giving us what we wanted in order to drag itself out for another season or two (just as it did this season).
K-On, for gliding past the finish line on the sheer power of fandumb rather than any substantial merit of it’s own.
Maid-sama, which I couldn’t stand past episode 9 even though I tried forcing myself.. just completely not my comedy style at all, and everything else sucked unless you are a sucker for boring bishies.

Didn’t get to watch Rainbow or Night Raid, but I’ll probably do so this season since it looks hella boring. Rainbow seems like a melodrama I can stand (and should have watched instead of more Maeda) and I was just tired of waiting for Night Raid fansubs until I more or less forgot about it.

Tatami Galaxy and Giant Killing were my favorite of this season. I also drooled over the House of the Five Leaves OP but a little less over the show. It was well-executed but couldn’t engage me enough.

As for Heroman…there honestly was a time during the middle of the series when I thought, hey I actually care that Heroman and Joey win this. However it was during the time of the most over the top caricature bad guy that it was hard not to root for Joey and Co. when you saw the alternative. After that it petered off again but I will praise the show for it’s final episode. Determined, glowing red, giant hand, baddass Joey was really cool looking. I also enjoyed making fun of the series on twitter.

Five Leaves was well made, but the pacing put me to sleep. 🙁 I think Giant Killing was my favorite out of this bunch. Not the best made show by any stretch, but it was the one I enjoyed watching most week to week.

With regards to disliking Working, I did some posts on it:

    http://myswordisunbelievablydull.wordpress.com/2010/04/08/if-working-isnt-quite-working-for-you-try-the-manga/

    http://myswordisunbelievablydull.wordpress.com/2010/04/14/working-2-for-the-first-time-i-cant-decide-if-im-glad-for-this-anime-being-around-as-a-fan-of-the-manga-or-pissed-because-it-sucks-so-hard/

I will prolly continue SD Gundam because I love SD Gundam, and Mayio Neko Overrun just because I’m interested in the fact that every episode was done by a different director.

Man, I really need to watch Tatami Glaxy… Anyway, glad Arakawa s.1 is in your top 3, and would’ve given Maid-sama! another point or two, but same difference I guess (bloody JC Staff, grr.). Uragiri, despite the shameless BL overundertones, was an enjoyable character-driven and action packes series with some really gorgeous artwork, so it’s a shame that it didn’t deliver (I blame the underwhelmingly evil villains), otherwise I thought it had loadsa potential. Just for BL fangirls? Or a love that transcends time and genders? I still can’t decide, hmm…

@Hogart we pretty much agree on everything but Arakawa. I honestly wouldn’t expect people to be interested in either rainbow or night raid from a first glance without being interested in the genres they are from

@Taka no matter what anyone says about Heroman it will always be crap to me. i’d rate it lower but i don’t feel it deserves that much hate from me even though it was an anime i totally should have enjoyed. Joey = a girl and put there for trap fanservice. I couldn’t stand it in the slightest >.< @Shinmaru I had a lot of fun reading your giant killing posts so i'm glad you did it ^__^ @digital boy ahh so its a manga to anime fail for you gotcha @Hana Uragiri totally had loads of potential but just didn't take the leap it needed to be really good. i'm still pissed off over it. I really do think it is one of those series just for BL fangirls cause they like that kind of stuff...
