chii’s Anime Snack of the Week: Kite & Liberator
Hilariously enough Kite was my very first anime purchase ever. (It might have been Macross Plus instead but I honestly can't remember too clearly
) I didn't have a clue what it was suppose to be about other than the blurb on the package, which I will admit I didn't read beyond knowing it was the "Director's Cut". Since it was only five bucks I said why not and got it. Oddly enough upon my first viewing of it I was not repulsed out of my mind because of the odd random sexual content. In fact I enjoyed it and watched it again with my sister! When 2008 rolled around with the indirect sequel, Kite Liberator, I was so happy. I was highly interested in seeing what a new look at an old favourite would be like... It turned out interesting...
Positive Points
- Kick ass action (Both anime)
- The girls will make you love them (Both anime)
- Blood, guts, and lots of murder (Both anime more so for Kite though)
- Pretty straight forward story (Kite)
Negative Points
- The sex scenes might not be for everyone (Kite)
- What exactly is going on may confuse (Kite Liberator)
- Even though these titles share the same name they are pretty different
Why chii thinks you should watch it
If you love action, kick ass girls, and just plan fun ova's these 2 are for you. Oh and it helps if you aren't shy about sexual scenes in your anime for Kite if you watch the Directors Cut version. I can't say that these 2 ova's are the best thing ever but they are super entertaining. Especially in group viewings. I certainly am proud that the first Kite sits on my DVD shelf and hope to buy the second one at some point. If you are looking for a great way to waste a few hours these 2 titles watched back to back will fill that void and not feel like a waste at all!
Further reactions to these OVAs:

Weirdly enough, I just watched Kite and have Liberator on order from Netflix. Kite was pretty cool; I liked the action set-pieces, even though explody violence of that sort doesn’t affect me that much anymore. The sex is just … animated sex has always looked super creepy to me (whether it’s intended to be or not), so those parts I could have done without lol.

heh yeah. I think the sex in it was suppose to be creepy for sure considering her age and his age… and the weird circumstances of course.
All I can say about liberator is good luck hehehe

So glad I picked this one for you =P . I really love Kite, especially the first one. it’s such a tragic, dramatic, dark and gritty little show. the world is black and blacker. There are no good guys, only bad and worse guys. Yet two people managed to connect, to find love is such an ugly place. And the Sequel OVA wasn’t bad either. it’s a great send off to crazy over-actiony older shows and ovas! Sounds like one of those OVA’s where they threw everything together. Cute girl assassin? Of course. Sci-fi? SURE! Monster? SURE! Evil corporation? Why not?
Thanks for reviewing these. Everyone has to see them, especially Kite. A real classic.

LOL! I want to say you that you couldn’t pick a worse gateway or starter anime, but I’ve met a lot of people who have had Ninja Scroll or even Mezzo Forte as their early introductions to anime. I’m glad to see some of the good ol’ anime ultra-violence get some love. I haven’t seen the newest Kite, but I suppose I should give it a shot.

@DonKangolJones oh well this wasn’t my gateway starter anime at all LOL just in the purchase category of my anime fandom. Either way I love love love this ova
Ninja Scroll I actually have to thank for getting me into the more serious side of anime
