chii’s Anime Snack of the Week: Mermaid & Memory 1964

Mermaid or in Japanese Ningyo is one of Osamu Tezuka's short experimental movies. Memory also happens to be one of his short movies that was created in the same year. Both are very different but will make you wonder and think hard about what the message was. Mermaid is about a boy who likes to daydream but others don't understand this and extreme measures are taken for his sanity. Memory is about memories!

Positive Points

  • 14 minutes to watch both
  • Will make you think
  • Arty

Negative Points

  • Arty
  • Memory is really weird

Why chii thinks you should watch it

Well seeing little pieces of moving history is always a good thing. Especially two that were done by the Godfather of Anime! More of his shorts are floating around so you should seek those out too! Mermaid has no talking which is pretty standard for shorts of the time yet it does a really good job imagery wise. It impressed me greatly with how it looks. It's actually really stunning. Memory does have talking but it is way more out there thought wise unlike Mermaid. Memory leaps from the thoughts of love, work, and war. Even extending to a time where humans might not even be on the Earth anymore. Wacky stuff awaits by the end of it. TOILETS!!

Yup toilet culture!

Cooking With Oishii Anime 06

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

Which anime is that delicious dish from? Morita-san wa Mukuchi is just one of those run of the mill short episode anime that focuses on a bunch of girls being silly in school. Here is the glorious episode that this potato comes from! It is also a very cute episode on how I feel about baking too!

What is that delicious dish? SWEET POTATO!

How do I make that delicious dish?

The Sweet Potato:

  • Set your oven to 400
  • Select your sweet potato of choice (or any potato for that matter)
  • Lovingly give it a bath (be sure to get any dirt off so get in those holes and crevasses good)
  • Sprinkle some salt and pepper on it and any other spices you wish (tell the potato you want it to smell good)
  • Tell your delicious one that you must now cut off one or both of its tips. (or if you like you can stab it with a fork a few times. The potato should understand why this needs to be done)
  • Once the above deed is done you must now put the potato in the oven on a pan (tell it it is going to the sauna on the rocks for 45 minutes)
  • After 45 minutes or until you can poke it so that a knife can easily slide in and out you can take the potato out of the oven

The Dish:

Get a plate and shove 2 candles in there! HAPPY FREAKING BIRTHDAY CHII!!

Oishii!

If you have a picture of some yummy anime food you think I could re-create send a message or leave a comment. Which anime the picture is from would help me greatly along with the episode number it is featured in.

2013 Winter of Short

This is the most shorts I've seen air in one season so far. (someone prove me wrong if they want) I like shorts so there's no complaints from me here! 13 new ones and 5 carry overs making 18 of them in total is an awful lot though. What gives anime industry? Feeling lazy this winter or were we all expecting the world to end? LOL

13 new shows are airing that aren't S2's or short episode anime. Very interesting. I've only watched the S2 shows of these and the shorts so far. I might wait till 3 eps are out of all the new ones to start em or I'll just wait till they are all finished at the end of March. Who knows! I'm pretty content with all the shows I am watching along with playing more video games since I got a lot of those over the holidays.

This picture about sums up how strange this one is.

Ai Mai Mii

Cute girls in school poorly drawn that want to draw their own poorly drawn material. The humour is delivered quick, fast, and random so if you like that sort of thing this one is pretty good. It also has a really awesome ED theme along with imagery.

So not a show about a girl wanting to be a man much to the disappointment of a lot of fans.

Mangirl

More girls but this time they aren't in school. They are working towards a silly goal of making the #1 manga magazine in Japan... Keep reaching for that rainbow girls!

Moe mountain!

Yama no Susume AKA Encouragement of Climb

2 school friends with very different personalities wish to climb a mountain... Yeah this one I can't really relate to so I find it incredibly boring. I guess seeing them actually achieve their goal will be cute though. If it happens...

Has bitch written all over her!

Boku no Imouto wa Oosaka Okan

Sister moves in with brother after being apart for 10 years. YAY another one of those bro/sis animu... -___- This one tries to be funny by bringing in the Japanese Kansai dialect. At least this is a short and not full length like those other shitty ones.

PPPPPPPPPPPP

Puchimas! Petit [email protected]

Ever wanted to see the [email protected] girls in chibi form? Yeah neither do I... Actually I'm sure a lot of you out there wanted this! At least it has a few laughs here and there. I wonder how long it is gonna be since it seems to air everyday which is crazy!

One of the best WTF moments in anime ever!

Inferno Cop

This one is the most different of the bunch. All I can really say is there is a cop that has a skull bone head and he's on fire sometimes. Randomness gets thrown at you to the MAX.

BOOBS!

Ishida to Asakura

Boys in school thinking about their big breasted classmates... I'm not sure what to think about this one yet but it has some Cromartie High School vibes going on for me.

My favourite of the short episode series.

Senyuu

This one is the "best"even though it's still rather meh. Time will tell to see how funny these chibi swordsmen can be. I like how it really reminds me of Tower of Druaga.

Glad to see the strange is still in gdgd!

gdgd Fairies 2

This one is a season 2 unlike all the other short ones this season. It is 15 minutes instead of 1-5 minutes long too so it almost doesn't count as a short but by the way I define a short it does. (anything with a time length different from the normal 22-26 minutes). It really is just more of the same old from season 1. Nothing great, very random, and some pretty wtf moments. Always quality entertainment!

~~~
Beast Saga, Jigoku Youchien & Line Offline Salaryman are floating around but they haven't appeared yet. Dunno if they ever will honestly. More Hetalia is on its way soon too which is exciting!
We even have some carry overs that I mentioned at the beginning of the post that are still airing. The everlasting (for some reason) Chibi Devi, the adorable mini old man Chiisana Oji-san (at least I think it is still airing not too sure), the wacky adventures of a strange magical girl witch Kuromajo-san ga Tooru, and the oh so silly yet addicting Oshiri Kajiri Mushi AKA Butt-Biting Insect. There's one more called Picchipichi Shizuku-chan that is still going but no one has picked that one up. I think it airs on a channel not many people follow or something I dunno. It looks cute so I hope I get to see it someday.
Will chii blog any of these? haha no.... I'll stick with attempting to catch up on Chibi Devi IF anything this winter. I should probably finish Wooser and High Score first though!
chii’s Anime Snack of the Week: The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon 1963
The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon or in Japanese Wanpaku Ouji no Orochi Taiji is one of the first fully animated coloured movies in Japan. It is about a boy named Susano, who is a God, his mother has just pass away so he is determined to go and find her. His father of course refuses to indulge in this journey. After a long tantrum Susano awakes on the beach to see his mothers spirit. After a heart to heart talk she magically gives him a necklace that will protect him from danger. Susano still wishes to go and see his mother in this very far away land called Heaven that she'll be staying at. She too tries to persuade him not to look for her but Susano of course sets off on a journey to find her after building his very own boat. Many adventures await him!
Positive Points
  • Considered a classic
  • Dubbed
  • Cute story
  • Decent action
  • Feels very Disney
Negative Points
  • Animal sidekicks
  • Feels very Disney
  • Convenient things happen for Susano to succeed
Why chii thinks you should watch it
If you are a fan of movies this is a must see. It not only is one of the first coloured anime, it looks pretty darn great considering it was made in 1963. While the story and action/adventure aspect of the movie is pretty generic it still manages to keep the viewer entertained. At least I was. The music really helped with that as it is amazing. I kinda wish that the rabbit wasn't so annoying that goes with Susano on his journey but I think that was mostly the dub's fault. After all having it just be Susano going on this journey would have been pretty lame. So yeah go and check it out! It is only an hour and a half so it is no longer than an early Disney movie. It isn't the greatest thing ever but it won't be a waste of your time either.
50 Years of Anime 1963-2013
So back in October I was randomly looking at older anime and I realized that the Astro Boy anime was going to be 50 years old in 2013! Exactly 50 years old on January 1st 2013!!
So I decided I wanted to do a little something on here all year long because of this. So I'm going to go through all 50 years of anime noting important shows, shows I've watched from each year, or just talking about stuff that happened in general in those years. The anime world is huge so there's no way one person can cover EVERYTHING but I'll do my best. Anime isn't the only thing I'll take a look at either. I'll take a look at important people and studios too.
There is another awesome blog solely dedicated to the 50 years of anime that you should totally check out too! It will have lots more information about these 50 years from a lot of different people!
The Golden Ani-Versary of Anime (1963-2013)
50 Years of Televised Win
