A to Z Anime Reviews: B is for… Bounty Hunter: The Hard

With a gun like that you do not want to mess with HARD

For B is for Bounty Hunter: The Hard review. I shall give you a lovely play by play of this ova. You know... So you don't have to watch it! SPOILERS BELOW!

Hard is a bad ass but not so much when it comes to his daughter it seems... (looks like he's ready to go on a date than to see his daughter...)

We start off witnessing a mystery surgery on a woman only moments later to find her floating in the river clearly dead. A news broadcast announces this while our hero bounty hunter, Hard, walks into a titty bar where his next target is... Can't be a ova from the 90's without BOOBS! Hard finds his target easily because a man dressed as a woman to "hide" when he's a pretty ugly dude just doesn't work very well. Sadly his prey is snatched by a rival bounty hunter and Hard goes home empty handed.

Hard lives for his daughter but rarely gets to see her since he is separated from his wife. Having yet another visit from his daughter cancelled, Hard takes on a new job taking him to the Bronx. He's after a man who has a scar on half of his face from I guess a fire or acid or something. He stole money from a church! Oh that bad Freddie!

While looking around for Freddie, Hard unfortunately finds the dead body of his bounty hunting rival. They didn't get along of course but Hard still feels the pain of loosing a comrade in arms.

Oh that "sexy" Suzy...

Hard's next lead brings him to a gay bar but when he arrives he notices the man, Suzy, (Suzy looks like a typical ugly queen that thinks they are super pretty) he was wanting to meet with leaving so he follows him to a church. THE church our good old pal Freddie stole from! Suzy starts ragging on the same blind girl Hard helped in the first 3 minutes of the show and suddenly car chase! This goes on for a few minutes until Hard manages to get through an exploding truck with his jeep on fire. Still chasing Suzy of course. While they are still battling in a tunnel he manages to snag the girl from Suzy's car. I don't even remember how this happened that's how good Hard is! Upon leaving the tunnel poor Suzy ends up spinning out still in the tunnel. He tries to take one last shot at Hard but unfortunately there are some loose wires near water (Why? Who knows...) causing massive explosions! This leaves poor Suzy badly injured. OH HIS PRETTY FACE!!!

Do a barrel roll!

Cut to Hard making some pasta and listening to a message his daughter left him while the passed out girl he rescued again lays in his bed. Apparently his wife is seeing someone new! Or so his daughters message says, OH MY!

Hard continues his search for Freddie. Miriam (the blind girl) was the one that ended up "making" Freddie steal the money from the church. He apparently really wants her to have some surgery that will likely help her get her eyesight back. Guess Freddie ain't so bad after all! Miriam after separating from Hard gets a phone call from Freddie and somehow Hard is their waiting outside her place to follow her. The three meet in what looks like an abandoned warehouse. Miriam begs Freddie to stop doing dangerous jobs for her sake but before the conversation can continue they are attacked by Chopper (Suzy's angry lover) and Suzy. This is where all hell breaks loose.

Something smells fishy...

After the battle Suzy and Freddie end up being the causalities. The last thing Freddie does is hand over a mysterious disk to Hard. This disk ends up having medical records upon it. He's stumbled upon a black market for human organs!

Hard then heads off to the church where the priest should be whom he found to be very suspicious when they spoke about Freddie and Miriam earlier. When confronted the priest rambles on about doing God's work and cleaning the streets of scum. When Hard has had enough of his righteous blab he opens fire with his trusty MACHINE GUN...

Eventually the battle leads to a silly hand to hand combat and of course Chopper appears with his own machine gun ready to wreck everything in his path to avenge his beloved Suzy. Not even caring that he shoots the priest, Chopper continues on after Hard. God was clearly angry about all this going on in one of his houses of prayer so the Jesus cross falls right into Choppers eyeball killing him good and dead!

Arg the eyeball!!

END....

Cut to Miriam standing at a grave of Freddie. Hard stands in the background but doesn't approach. Cut to Hard calling his daughter asking about his wife's new boyfriend... "So... What's her boyfriend like?" THE END.

Not the best of endings I gotta say, but well having it end was good enough... 4/10 won't watch again and will likely forget about it entirely after a month. Bad music, Bad characters, BAD STORY!!

I considered no other "B" anime for this project since I haven't seen this ova before today.

A to Z Anime Reviews: A is for… Afro-ken

Oh that fun loving pup!

I'm going to start off small for this project. A is for Afro-ken who is a dog with an afro and that's all there is to it! Seriously... We spend 30 whole minutes watching Afro-ken frolic around with "his?" buddies doing whatever pleases them. Which is generally being near fluffy things for Afro-ken. Which means a lot of sheep are in this ova! I love sheep so yay!!

We briefly take a pause to listen to the creator of Afro-ken, Aimi Tetsurou whom works for the San-X company, (makers of all things CUTE) talk about why he created Afro-ken in the first place. Basically he likes dogs... A lot... And being weird! Because weird is exactly what these CG dogs are. When he held up a plushie of Afro-ken I kinda squealed because it is adorable and I'd love to have one! We also learn that he wants to go into SPACE one day... HELL YEAH ME TOO!

I WANT!!

So umm yeah watch Afro-ken for some Afro dog strangeness! Just don't expect a masterpiece or anything since nothing seriously happens in this show. Just some good old random doggy fun!

Other “A” anime I considered... Afro Samurai... Ah My Buddha... Air Gear

Not so Secret Santa: Figure 17

The Not so Secret Santa Project is now graced with Draggle with the oh so awesome anime Figure 17! I LOVED IT SO MUCH!

Tsubasa is a super shy girl that suddenly moved from Tokyo to the country side after her mothers passing. Here is where her life changes for better or worse. An alien crash landed on Earth who just happened to be carrying some deadly monster seeds that have hatched! Tsubasa ends up merging with a liquid/metal life form that helps the alien fight these monsters. Except instead of going back into a liquid/metal form after fighting, Tsubasa's ends up making a clone of her. Thus the story begins to fight these monsters before they destroy the Earth.

First off I gotta start with the soundtrack. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. It is pretty rare that I listed to an OP (sorry about the low quality) and ED each and every time but I just couldn't help it with these ones. SO GOOD. Even all the tracks throughout the series were great. They always fit the mood of what was going on and even got exciting during the battle scenes. I'm generally not one to care too much about looks but I gotta say for a series made 2001-2002 it didn't have that "feels like it was made in the 90s" look to it like most shows from the early 2000 have. Well maybe the alien monster designs date back to the 80s XD. I watched the show in English and didn't mind it one bit. I think it actually helped me enjoy the show more since I wasn't so focused on reading subtitles all the time. The girls clone got a little irritating with her voice now and then but nothing I couldn't handle. Each episode was also 45 minutes long which is always an odd yet interesting thing to me. Not quite sure why they went with this format but I gotta say it worked out very well. While some episodes felt like they were much longer because the show is quite slow I still enjoyed the length. Heck sometimes the episodes flew by in an instant!

Plot wise the show is fairly simple. Girl has a kinda shitty life, it changes one day to super exciting, and she gets to save the world with aliens. But oddly enough what makes the show excellent for me (even though the alien plot is rather kick ass too imo) her daily slice of life routines is what really makes you care about every single character in the show. Going to school everyday, walking home, taking care of her dog, talking with her father, all really mundane stuff but always interesting. We really learn a lot about her and her friends and even her "family" that owns a dairy farm and makes bread. There was one episode that really focused on the farms daily life and I think it was one of the greatest episodes I have ever seen in all of anime haha! We even learn a far amount about the two aliens that are working with her to save the world as well. Not as much as I would have liked but what little we did get about them was fantastic.

The only thing that I can honestly say that I disliked about the show was the rather lacklustre ending. While the ending was good in its own... For some reason I was just wanting a little more at the end. Not sure what but SOMETHING! But don't get me wrong the ending was really fitting and good for this kind of show.

WATCH THIS SHOW BECAUSE I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!

Not so Secret Santa: Innocent Venus

If you aren't considering Spherical Cows yet you really should.  Sandra was kind enough to suggest for the Not so Secret Santa Project a little known show called Innocent Venus. This title I had been saving up for a rainy or I guess snowy day in my anime viewing. Glad I finally got around to it because I agree with Sandra, it was quite the treat.

In a dystopian world, humanity is split into the wealthy class, known as the Logos and the poor class, knows as the Revenus. A resistance group from the Revenus is formed because of how poorly the Logos treat them. Barricading them from certain areas and keeping them in specific zones. Thus keeping the poor, poor and the rich, rich. It is hard times all around but the poor clearly have it worse than the rich. To help keep the Revenus in check the Logos created an elite military group known as Phantom. Two boys, Jo and Jin, escape from this group along with a special girl, Sana. Thus their journey starts trying not to get caught and learning just what is so special about Sana.

Honestly this show starts off pretty slow but once you get into it, about 4 episodes in, it starts to get really interesting. Mainly because you actually start to remember what's been happening and who is who because it is a little confusing for the first few episodes. Since they info dump the state of the world in the first five minutes of episode one and you are all like "waaa wait what??" then you are running away off into the resistance!

The music at times is overly dramatic which is ok for the most part oddly enough. It definitely adds to the tension of certain scenes. I wish I cared about the OP and ED though... They just feel like the same old same old. Which is a shame honestly because the rest of the music really fits the mood of the show. The mecha in this world oddly remind me of Flag. A show that ghostlightning made me watch last year. They are very realistic looking and just like Flag while the mecha hold an important roll in the show everything else just seems WAY more important. I guess that's what happens when you have great character development!

Speaking of characters. They are all awesome. Bad guys, good guys, everyone! For a series that is only 12 episodes long you sure do feel like you know each and every character no matter how small their roll was. Jo and Sana are particularly well done. It is always nice to see a show about someone protecting another because they just want to instead of HAVING to. They meet this band of pirates lead by this Toraji dude. When we first meet him he always has octopus legs hanging out of his mouth, pretty much the entire first episode we meet him in. Just to further show his eccentric side if we didn't get that already with his samurai outfit, his scar, and his wearing of a pirate coat, hat and all. I gotta say that his lovely wench Hijin was interesting as well. She is a HUGE lady and one not to mess around with.

Jin, that escaped with Jo and Sana is a very confused but fun character. He has these typical "I'M GONNA WIN EVERYTHING" moments then he switches instantly to being pretty depressing. I really couldn't help but to giggle at Jo and Jin's sad but tender bromance. These 2 had been through a lot together and because of that they are pretty close even though neither would likely admit it if I could ask them. I honestly felt like I was watching a Final Fantasy set to an anime with how these characters all acted towards one another which was super fun.

In the end it is kinda anticlimactic but I'd still tell people to watch this show for the awesome characters.
